Wormy-ponic


After starting earlier in the fall 2014 a vermicompost bin - my partner suggested I do so - I though she may not object my new plan of growing some food in the city ... Since there is neither a backyard or a rooftop that we can use, I decided to build an hydro/aquaponics system.
The "system" is in 2 parts: the tower, and the reservoir (and of course the plumbing).
The tower is made from reused plywood, covered on the inside with cellophane wrap (to prevent leaching of chemicals from the old plywood) with a slit on the face. The slit is where the plants are installed. The grow media inside the tower is polyester fluffy filling from an old comforter. The joints where waterproofed using silicone caulking, and the exterior was covered with a white water based paint
The reservoir is made from a small filing store-box find by the neighboring trash (made of PE). I have cut a triangular section on the top and added a couple of small planks on the underside of the lid to make a support for the base of the tower. Also on the top of the lid I places another couple of planks to support the "lower back" of the tower. To make sure that the water coming down from the tower does not run on the top of the lid, I heated up the plastic of the lid with a heat gun and bend area around where the tower is siting. I also made a notch on one side for the power cord of the pump, and the irrigation tubing.
The plumbing: a pump and tubing to circulate the water. The tubes are made of food grade PE, as well as a few elbows. I also have a small air pump to aerate the water (for when and if I end up getting fishes). The tube is held in place using a copper tube anchor. The pump is on a 30 min increment timer, and activates the pump and a makeshift lighting 30 minutes intermittently for 18 hours a day.
